For 35 seasons, Coach Tom Bertrand has been a cornerstone of St. Louise de Marillac Catholic Middle School, faithfully leading the volleyball program with a blend of dedication, humility, and heart. His impact extends far beyond the court. Through every practice, game, and team huddle, Coach Bertrand has shaped nearly and entire generation of STL student-athletes—not only into stronger players but into compassionate, faith-filled young people.

Known for his unwavering commitment to Christian values, Coach Bertrand has always emphasized character over championships, teamwork over talent, and growth over glory. His players describe him as a mentor and a teacher who led by example—modeling integrity, discipline, perseverance, and love of God in everything he did. His legacy lives on in the lives of the hundreds of students he’s coached, many of whom carry his lessons into high school, college, and beyond.

The Tom Bertrand Scholarship Fund was established to honor his remarkable service and to continue his mission of uplifting student-athletes who reflect his values. This scholarship supports young players who demonstrate sportsmanship, a strong work ethic, leadership on and off the court, and a deep-rooted faith. Through this fund, Coach Bertrand’s spirit of encouragement and inspiration will continue to shape future generations—both in volleyball and in life.

This scholarship will be given to an athlete that maybe has not yet had the honor of being coached by Tom Bertrand. However, in receiving this award, may they feel embraced by him the way that so many others have before them.

The Scholarship

​

This scholarship has been established to support student-athletes who demonstrate a strong commitment to both personal character and athletic excellence. Eligible applicants (any current STL volleyball player in grades 4-8) must submit a letter of application directly to Coach Haley to be reviewed by the scholarship committee, detailing the athlete's dedication to community service, a faith-forward mindset, consistent good sportsmanship, and a genuine passion for the game of volleyball. This scholarship is intended to assist with the cost of one year of club volleyball tuition and will be awarded to individuals who embody the values that this fund was created to celebrate and promote.

Donations will be accepted in perpetuity even after Coach Tom is retired!
